Camps Bay, set within a spectacular panorama of crisp white plain fringed beach with the verdantly green backdrop spanning Lions Head, Table Mountain and the 12 Apostles mountains sweeping behind it, is without doubt one of the most desirable locations for a home worldwide.
Within this distinctive milieu, we were handed the challenge to redesign and extensively extend a house and create a sophisticated yet welcoming family home that would offer incredible ease of living to its owners.
The first impression of the house is formed when you enter the plot it is built on via the South entry and see the hand hewn dressed stone wall, which creates a strong presence by its natural textures offsetting the smooth plastered facade elevations. The contrast of textures is further highlighted by the use of natural weathered Balau timber screens.
The double volume entrance hall brings you into the main living area via a transitionary covered entrance court flanked by linear Zen inspired water features.
One of the great features of the house is the spacious covered terraces and patios which open directly onto the expansive level garden area. The frameless glass doored entertainment terrace, complete with built-in barbecue, pizza oven and service bar can be fully utilised even in winter, since its equipped with both underfloor and infrared heating. A sumptuously suede upholstered home theatre is the focal point for in-house entertainment.
Ultimately, the success of this project is that the resulting alteration is seamless. It is impossible to tell where we added on or even to imagine the house as any different to what it has now been transformed into; a warm home that fulfils the highest standards of design.
